Frank, I served a hitch in the Navy before I went Coast Guard, and went through boot camp at NTC Great Lakes. I'll never forget standing morning quarters on the grinder in the dead of winter, with the wind whipping in off Lake Michigan. Even with peacoats, gloves, and woolen watch caps, that wind would cut right through us. How those poor, raggedy Confederate POWs stood it, I'll never know.
