Gary,
Yes, I live in Massac Co. Small world!! I've seen the stone for John over here at the Masonic. Didn't you have a Higdon in your family...Susan or Sarah. Seems like she was married to a Higdon prior to marrying a Matthews. I did some research on her years ago, but don't recall the details at the moment.
There are several stones in Pulaski Co. with "MMB" on them. Some are at the Mounds City National Cem., but I remember some being in other cemeteries throughout the county. I'll check my books and see who they are and what cem. they are in. The ladies who recorded the books did a good job, but I would want to visit the cemeteries myself if you're going to put the information on the net.
There were 2 Illinois regiments of Infantry transferred to the MMB; and Company K 18th IL Inf (Consolidated), but you probably have that information already. Two companies of the 29th IL Inf. were transferred to the Dept. of the Navy too (K & H). Many of them served on the Tyler & Alfred Robb also.
I had some family move here too from Hardin Co., TN and that general area--Hurst, Kerr & Welch. They all settled in Pope Co. when they came here. Some went back and enlisted in both Confederate and Federal TN regiments.
