ANN:

I certainly would be interested in both names and burial places of MS Marine Brigade members. Although I never got around to building it into the web site, I have a fairly good sized database on the members of this unusual unit.

I also infer from a later message that you live in Massac County, IL? My gggfather, James Matthews settled in Massac in 1863 along with his father, Hardy, and brothers John, Benjamin, Joshua, etc. It was James' & John's enlistment in the Union Navy from Hardin Co., TN that got me interested in riverine naval history.

James moved with his father to Johnson Co., abt. 1871 where they both died in 1874. James wasted away from a disease contracted while aboard the USS Tyler and is buried with a CW headstone in Rentfro Cem., near Vienna, next to his father.

John also enlisted aboard the Tyler but was transferred to the USS Alfred Robb when that vessel was captured by the Tyler. John lost a thumb and forefinger in the premature firing of a howitzer but survived the war and is buried in Metropolis Masonic Cem., also with a Navy stone.

I've been to the courthouse and library in Metropolis (had my pic taken with Superman, of course) and have visited the library and old marine ways at Mound City and prowled the banks of the Ohio looking for relics.
