Ann, I have a vested interest in John Ferrell, and the two other pilots who were awarded the Medal of Honor, and have included a short mention of them at my web site on MOH trivia and obscure facts (in Fact File 1). There is also a web site titled HOME OF HEROES, which includes data on the recipients, including burial sites for those that are known. Unlike the Army, the Navy never awarded an MOH to a Naval officer (at the time of the action for which the recipient received the award). Some recipients LATER became officers, including one of the pilots, Martin Freeman, who had a rather fascinating history (again, see Fact File 1, link shown below). [The three pilots who received the award were obviously serving in a civilian capacity at the time of the action.]
As an aside, I believe I have found a major error in the current listings of the birthplace and credited state of MOH recipient, Peter Williams, of the USS MONITOR. The data currently shown in MOH publications is at odds with the data on Williams, as shown in the Navy Register. A researcher in Washington, D.C., who is helping me in this matter has found that there were two persons of this name, who enlisted at the same time, though born in different countries in Europe. It is now very obvious that the birthplace of one was mistakenly shown for the other, who had received the MOH. I am now in the process of trying to locate the final resting place of Williams, which I believe to be in California, his correct credited state, instead of Pennsylvania, which all MOH publications have previously mistakenly listed.
