Terry,
I've seen your site before. It's a great website.

As local history goes, John H. was going to enlist in the 29th IL Infantry under his brother, Capt. Charles Ferrell, but when U.S. Grant found out he had been operating boats up and down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers all of his life, he (Grant) decided to hire him as a pilot.

He did apply for and receive a pension (seems like he received it in 1884).

He and Charles lived in Hardin Co., IL operating riverboats for many years. John moved to Massac Co., IL (across the river from Paducah, KY). He lived here about 20 years and owned 3 boats at different times. His wife's family operated a hotel near the river. He applied for a pension through a local attorney, but fired him just when he received word that he was going to receive a pension. He moved back to Hardin Co., where he later died (I forget the year). He, his wife, and his brother have one large headstone in a cemetery overlooking the Ohio river (Price cem.) just outside of Elizabethtown, IL. The local veteran's organization in Hardin Co. got a bronze marker (footstone)for him a few years ago.

Would you like copies of my notes or the photo?

Do you know anything about the Dizenback who also received the medal? The reason I ask is that we had a "Lizenback" family here also and was wondering if perhaps the name was recorded incorrectly in the OR's.
Ann
