And yet another tidbit:

On p. 437 of ORN series I, vol. 24, in a communication from Lt. Cmdr. Breese to Lt. Cmdr. Greer of 26 Feb 1863, there is the following intriguing comment:

"The ram QUEEN has vanished below, chased by Bache's monitor."

QUEEN, of course, refers to the captured QUEEN OF THE WEST; "Bache" may refer to Lt. Cmdr. George M. Bache, commanding officer of the CINCINNATI, or just possibly to Alexander D. Bache of the Coast Survey. "Bache's monitor" is almost undoubtedly a reference to the first "dummy."

One wonders if Professor Bache had suggested the ploy in a communication to Porter (he was corresponding with Porter about the work of some Coast Survey personnel with the Mississippi Squadron in January, 1863), or if Lt. Cmdr. Bache had some hand in constructing the "dummy."
