Maxine Turner's book, "Navy Gray" seems to conclude that there was never any serious attempt to gather materials for the Columbus "Monitor". Chief Engineer Warner did correspond with Selma about using 11-inch guns in the turret. I suspect that they would have been smooth-bores. I keep hoping that someone is going to come up with a diary or something from someone at that Yard to explain how they intended to move the turret if would be a Coles-type. The Confederates should have had a lot of data on the Coles types because of the contract for the two "Laird Rams". Apparently, copies of drawings and specs were forwarded to Richmond for approval as part of the contracts.
