Hi Dave: Thanks for the info, very interesting and informative. I think we can perhaps agree that in the case of Casemated vessels (no pun intended), there may well have been instances of some form of netting being installed against the bulkhead and overheads, I believe that this was probably a local fix for the purpose of containing any of the wooden support structure (planking, beams, etc) that might have otherwise imploded into the casemate workspace due to the external iron plating being deflected inwards and breaking into or through the softer inner wood structure after being hit by a solid shot or bolt?
I think the need for netting probably went away once the new turret design became the fashion, since the amount of wood needed for this type of vesel was reduced to deck planks, the hull and perhaps other non structural furnishings. And while its true people have been struck and badly injured by loose rivets and from the spalling effect of iron plate when impacted on the outside surface, without the amount of wood that had previously been present in the gun deck area, at least the old danger of being stabbed by multiple 3 foot splinters moving in all directions at high speed, had now been removed?
