In Response To: Re: Tarrant's Battery ()

Here is a short history of the Alabama battery as requested by Sherri Therrien. Sorry for the late responce as I have been out of town.
The battery was organized in May 1861 composed of men from Russell, Macon and Tallapoosa counties. The first commandewr was Captain Robert A Hardaway, the battery was sent to Virginia in June 1861 but missed Battle of Bull Run. Joined with the Army of Potomac and was in positions near Mananas until the army withdrew to the Peninsula in March to oppose McClellan's move to the Yorktown Peninsula. It fought at Battle of Seven Pines and later as part of Jackson's command in the Seven Days Campaign. Now part of the Army of Northern Virginia, had 110 men in June 1862, it participated in the summer battles in Virginia ending the summer at the Battle of Antietam. Moved to and took part in the Battle of Fredericksburg and was equipped with 2 3" rifles and 1 long range Whitworth Rifle. In spring 1863, Captain William B Hurt assigned to command of battery when Captain Hardaway was promoted and assigned to a artillery battalion command. The battery still part of the Army of Northern Virginia was in the Battle of Chancelorsville, and at the Battle of Gettysburg, had only 71 men. The battery remained in Virginia during the fall and winter of 1863/1864. In April 1864 the battery had 94 men and still the two 3" Rifles and one Whitworth Rifle. It fought in the Overland Campaign in Virginia, Wilderness, Spottsvania, Cold Harbor and finally the Siege of Petersburg. In the winter of 64/65, Captain Crenshaw took command of the battery during the Petersburg fighting in early 1865. The last commander of the battery was Lieutenant George A Ferrell, an officer who long served with the battery. He surrendered the battery at Appomattox in april 1865, the battery surrendered with 2 officers, 81 men, 44 horses, 4 guns, 3 caissons, and 548 rounds of ammunition on hand.

Hope this will help you
