I have a series of letters written to my great, great step-grandmother Anna Marrast Mabry (originally from Tuscaloosa) from Oliver James Lawrence, a sergeant in Tarrant's Battery. Lawrence is a Tuscaloosa attorney who enlists as a private in 1862 at the age of 44 after the death of his wife. His four brothers are also in the CSA. Three of the brothers die in the war, as well as Lawrence himself. Lawrence is in charge of a “rifle” in Tarrent’s Battery. The cannon is named “Anna”, as he is quite taken with her. He details his campaign eloquently as they travel through Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Florida. The activities of the battery are quite interesting and many fellow soldiers are mentioned in the account. The letters are microfilmed and are now in both the Alabama and Tennessee archives. I have transcriptions and would be glad to share them with any who are interested. I would also be appreciative of any information about the battery that might relate to Sgt. Lawrence.
