Jeremy:
A brief history of Tarrant's Alabama Battery. The battery was formed in June, 1863 at Pollard, Alabama, in the District of the Gulf. This was the command that defended Mobile, Mobile harbor and southern Alabama. The battery was commanded by Captain Edward Tarrant, who was promoted to captain from a lieutenant in Lumsden's Alabama Battery. At this time, the equipment of the battery was four 6 pounder field guns which were obsolete guns by this stage of the war. It continued service in the District of the Gulf until May, 1864 when it and the brigade it was attached to was ordered to Dalton, Georgia for service in the Army of Tennessee. The battery was now equipped with two 12 pounder field howitzers and two 3" rifles, better guns than those previous guns. It fought in the Atlanta Campaign and the siege of Atlanta. The battery also fought at Resaca, New Hope Church, Kennesaw Mountain, and Peach Tree Creek. In the fall of 1864, after the fall of Atlanta, it was still part of the Army of Tennessee and took part in the campaign in northern Alabama and went on to be part of Hood's campaign into central Tennessee in November, 1864. The battery suffered severely at the Battle of Nashville losing all of its guns and many of the men and horses. It was part of a group of field batteries commanded by Colonel Melanctom Smith, that were judged as too weak and poorly equipped to make the march to North Carolina with the remnants of the Army of Tennessee. Smith's group went to the District of the Gulf and took part in the defense of Mobile where the battery, Tarrant's battery still commanded by Capt. Edward Tarrant, fought as infantry at Fort Blakely. There, the battery was included in the surrender of the troops of the District of the Gulf spring 1865.
I hope this helps.
