Keith,
The only conclusion is that the slash cut may be for a sighting blade but these were not common on either a Napoleon or a 6 pounder field gun. A picture of this may help. A front sight blade was common on a James Rifle Type 2 made by Ames that may fit your description of the slash but this gun is believed to be a false Napoleon.
