Ron,

There is a GREAT example of a rebored and rifled (for James shell) bronze six pounder at Fredericksburg down in the bottom right near the river's flood plane, a part of Jackson's lines. It's a Revere tube as I recall. I can get the production numbers from my pictures or go back and up there and record them if you are interested. The rifling is in pretty good shape considering the bronze material. Maybe it wasn't fired much. Last weekend my wife and I were wandering Spotsylvania's Confederate line at The Salient just to the right of The Bloody Angle. There is a bronze six pounder displayed there that really caught my attention. It's a smoothebore but the tube is bored much larger than 3-5/8" just at the muzzle. This larger diameter extends into the bore maybe four inches (maybe less) then the standard bore size starts. It's a step transition with no blending from the larger bore to the standard bore. It's a Federal born gun from Springfield Mass., according to the right trunnion. I didn't have my camera in hand so I didn't get any pictures. And I can't remember the muzzle face stampings but the left trunnion was stamped 1847 as I recall . I'll have to go back and get some pics of it. It also had a trough or groove where the sight blade would have been instead of a threaded hole. But the typical breech pendulum sight mounting holes were there. Any opinions on this bore configuration? It's the first I have seen like it. Fredericksburg has some great artillery samples on both sides of the river. At Spotsylvania my wife rolled her eyes and shook her head when I quizzed her on the difference between the two Parrotts sitting side by side on the Confedretae line as we drove along. My description to her was correct when I ventured over and read on the right gun. "3 INCH" stamped in the breech and "US" in front of the vent. The left gun with it's chamfered breech band read "JRA & Co." on the right trunnion. A Tredegar 2.9 inch, just as I had told her. Muzzle swell and all. ;-)
