Doc Dave,I looked up at least Perryville for now .The 24Wisc. is mentioned several times.Part of Greussel's Brigade the 37th,Little Phil Sheridan's Div..The three Illinois Regiments part of the Hero's of Pea Ridge as Veterans they were teamed up with two green regiments the 24Wisc and the 21stMich. having little formal training reciently mustering.I am giving you this quote to to set the stage for the near future and what happened at Stones River. Not to take away anything but, to fortify the stature needed of Veteran troops.

"Each day yielded its usual harvest of rumors, fequently throwing the newformed regiments into a fever of excitement, but not disturbing the equanimity of the older troops."

"The 24th Wisconsin Volunteers was stationed to the left of the road, also protected by the summit of the ridge, while a section of Hescock's battery in its front."

"The 88Illinois and the 24th Wisconsin regiments relieved the 36,and as the latter retired, the former moved down the hill to the position just vacated."

"Finding amunition running low Adjutant Biddulf was sent for more;but it becoming entirely consumed before his return and the enemy's cavalry menaced us towards the left, the regiment ordered to"fix bayonets:'fire much slackened, the regiment was ordered"by the right companies to the rear,"leaving space for another regiment(the 24th Wisconsin),(to move up)supplied with amunition."

37brigade at Perryville,KY part of Sheridan's Division led by Col.Greussel
36th,44th,88Illinois,the 24Wisc and the 21st Michigan of Infantry,with Hiscock's Missouri and Barrett's 2nd Illinois batteries.

My GGGrandfathers brother in law Pvt.Edward Clark36IL.Inf.Co.K recieved a shrapnel wound in the hip at Chaplin's hills dieing a month latter from infection.

At least to some degree the battles start was over the fresh water at Goodnight spring as water was scarce and the rebels fouled what water was available.(The midwest was under a severe drought during the fall of 1862). Rebel Artillery perched on Chaplin's Hill overlooking the spring as if daring the Federals to attempt it. Attempt it they did. Securing the spring but,not without heavy loss.
