Thank you personal stories are interesting. The Sherman you mentioned in your first post might well be Col.Francis T.Sherman of the 88IL.not Gen.W.T.Sherman.as Col.Sherman was put in charge of the demi brigade at Adairsville.I did make a mistake as the 88IL.mustered in Sept. of 1862 leaving the Veterans the 44 and 36IL.I thought I remembered seeing the 88 at Rienzi,MS but, I was wrong.Sorry.I also have Kin in the 27Wisc.,7IL.,20IL.36IL.69IL.,113IL.,127IL.144IL..The IL. regt.are direct kin. The Wisc. is my Grandmothers family. My mothers GGrandfather,an Irish immigrant, fought in the 6 Louisiana Inf.CSA in the Eastern Campaigns.

Advance on Adairsville

"The enemies line covered more than our front and seemed strong at all points. They opened a furious fire on our thin line ,and our men had to lie down and protect themselves as best they could;many being shot while lieing down,on parts of the line that were most exposed. That was particularly true of the 24th Wisconsin line."

"I returned to the line and longed for night to come and stop the carnage.Just before, some troops(I was told they were Stanleys Division)moved up and took position on our left, somewhat retired, and were not brought under fire.on our right another force was brought up,and crossed the Oothercaloga, but well directed volley from the enemy forced them back a safe distance.Night soon set in and firing ceased."

The 24Wisc. had a band and played the dead march during the execution of two deserters one from the 44IL.and one the 88IL.Nov.12,1863

The "I' in the passages is William M.Haigh 36IL.chaplin and the main writer of the book. L.G.Bennett was the technical end.His GGranddaughter is Jill Polsby of Cal.that is how I found it.

The book is available in reprint from a guy(Bob's books?) in Bloomfield(?)IL..If you are interested I can get the info..I have found regimental histories of together troops help explain the experience of the total.
