Re: General John G Barnard
In Response To: Obit General John G Barnard ()

This is probably too late to be of any help, but I happen to be a descendant of Barnard's and am preparing a talk on his life and career, or at least what I know of it, to be given in September at a meeting of the historical society in the town of Sheffield, Mass., where he was born and is buried. You have probably obtained all the information you're seeking since I see by some of the replies to your request that several references have been offered. I am, however, very much interested in the biography you are writing, or have written, and would like to know where and how I might obtain a copy. I'm also interested to know why you are writing, or have written, about him, an unprepossessing career Army officer who is, or was, admittedly an engineer, scientist and mathematician of some stature among his peers, but otherwise obscure. The rare references to him in such volumes as Civil War histories seem to be limited to unsung or peripheral roles he played in such efforts as the reinforcement of the defenses of Washington, the planning of a flanking maneuver at the Battle of Bull Run and the reconnoitering of waterways on the James-York peninsula. And he hasn't lacked critics, either then or now.

Anyway, if you would be so kind as to send me a note some time, I would much appreciate. You have my email address. I live in Vermont.
