Re: Early Loomis Battery uniforms

This is the only information I have on their gray uniforms. A Detroit Free Press article of September 1 1860 gives their uniforms as blue dress coats and blue pants trimmed red. Blue regulation caps with red fountain plumes were worn. The fatigue uniforms were gray jackets, gray pants and gray caps.

As you can see the newspaper gave the color of trim for the blue uniforms but not the gray. I am not sure if this indicates that the gray uniforms were without trim or if the newspaper did not see fit to report the trim on their gray uniforms. Other units uniforms were described in the article and this included those companies' fatigue uniforms. The article did give information on the trim of other units fatigue uniforms. This may indicate a lack of trim on the Coldwater fatigue uniforms, or it could indicate nothing.

The Michigan Uniform Militia Regulation required blue or gray uniforms either dress or undress based on the uniforms worn by that branch of the U.S. Army. State buttons would replace the army buttons and the trim could be higher quality. Now what that means is open to discussion. Also in 1860 the State issued a General Order that units would obtain gray uniforms. Until additional information is found, the question of trim on the gray uniforms will remain an open question.
