Jim,
Good luck on your effort with the 14th Kansas. I have done some similar research with the 15th Kansas and have considered publication options as well. The problem I have run into is the fact that the 15th Kansas had around 1,500 members of the unit, so that's really 1,500 different stories. The 15th Kansas was scattered all over Kansas, from the Kansas/Missouri border, along the southern perimeter, and out west in Fort Zarah, Fort Larned, and Fort Riley. There's a whole history of the unit that took place after the Civil War officially ended in April 1865 and the unit wasn't mustered out until October 1865. That's several different perspectives of the war, so the problem I have is information overload. If you try and address every aspect of the unit's history, then you would wind up with a book that would be too thick too hold anyone's interest, except for real Civil War junkies. I assume you have encountered something similar.
