Thanks for the information, and I do have Nugent as Andrew in my files. In a Sep 1861 letter Margaret Hays wrote to her mother who lived in Cass Co. before going to California "I am sorry to tell you that George Roland Still holds to black Republicanism. I have not saw him but several of his neighbors told me that he was one of the strongest union men their was in Cass county. Quill Davis and the Burneys is so black they have left their homes and gone to the teritory (Kansas) to the Jayhawkers for protection. Cass Co. has turned out a great many Robbers, about the worst company of men we have for Robing at Kansas is the Cass Co. Jay Hawkers. Uncle Jemmy (Yager) is acquainted with some thirty or 40 of them, was looked upon once as one of clever men. Now these men looks upon going to a Secessionest house with wagons and loading everthing they can find, negros and everthing else, as right. They dont think it is Stealing. Two of the Cass companeys has preachers for the Captains"

George was John B. Rowland's father. The Rowland family all moved to Kansas shortly after this letter.

Margaret wrote on 6 Jan 1862 that "The people on Blue has Suffered a great deal. Cousin Dick house was burned and everthing they had was taken or Burned." and goes on to say that "Burned Mr Vaughns house, robed all the Keeneys of all they had." and "Old Uncle Billy Bryant was killed a few days before I wrote last to you Mother, you would hardety beleive it when I tell you that one of the Burneys boys was Captain of the company that killed him, his wifes Sisters Son, Quill Davis as Black as the Burneys. They visited us hear once since I wrote you. Stole a great many things, got all the Negros through the country, Mirium Mc had three to leave some three or four weeks ago." (It seems that the Cass Co. "Jayhawkers" were coming into Jackson Co. as far as Westport (Kansas City) on their raids.)

On 1 Aug 1862 Margaret wrote "their is no one living on high Blue now excepting mrs Duncan and her Brother living with her. Cousin Lis B. is living up their. They burned and destroyed everthing"
