It appears that company G and M contained Indians who are mustered under their Indian names. Of course, there may be many more under their English names. In the ORs, in the organization of the Dept of Arkansas (if I remember right) it shows Co. M under Capt James Vann (maybe a Cherokee from the 3rd IHG) attached to Phillips at Ft Smith.

Does anyone know of correspondence or reports that would shed some light on the formation of the regiment and where these persons were recruited? Were these Kansas Indians (i.e., Osage, Delaware, Shawnee, etc), "Five Civilized Tribes" (Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickisaw, Seminole), other?
