Re: J.B. Swain (Alias "Jeff Davis") - Red Leg

Chris,

The Swain court-martial in 1865 is unbelievable. The HBO show "Deadwood" could not hold a candle to it. The court-martial of Swain's XO, first Lieutenant John Roberts (who Swain shot), is almost as good. Roberts brother (the second Lieutenant, was also taken away in irons. Interestingly, Blunt had Swain arrested along with Bridges and others in 1863. However, Jeff Davis escaped. The "Wyandotte Commercial Gazette claimed that Swain "unaided by the government, only let loose on this border and requested to protect it, would be, as he has been, a greater terror to Bushwhackers and better protection to local men, than athousand regular soldiers in red tape leading strings, and controlled by old fogy conservatism." It's more of a Hoyt/Swain connection than a Jennison/Swain connection. Joseph Bloomington Swain is buried in Leavenworth.
