Re: J.B. Swain (Alias "Jeff Davis") - Red Leg

Chris,

Only for you! Kip Lindberg and I are still working on our book about the Kansas Jayhawkers and Red Legs. This is what I can give you now.

"CAPT. J.B. Swaine [sic] died last night at eight o'clock...He believed in killing rebels who would not submit to the laws of the country...The funeral will take place from his late residence on Seneca street..."LEAVENWORTH DAILY CONSERVATIVE. 1868

"The Leavenworth Conservative reports the death of CAPT. J. B. Swaine [sic], which occurred in that city on Friday evening last. He was a prominent member of the 'Red Leg' band, during the first years of the war, and well known along the border and in Missouri under the sobriquet of 'Jeff Davis...and did excellent service as a soldier, though, owing to his undisciplined habits and summary manner of dealing with foes, his merits were never properly recognized by the generals in command..KANSAS DAILY TRIBUNE

Chris,

I would not place to much on the Jennison/Swain connection. Swain told the court at one point that, "I will paint Col. Jennison in his true character, and that is, he would hang every officer he has before he would sholder the responsibility that justly belongs to him."

Swain was in Kansas well before the war. We need to save the rest for the book. Swain was a real scumbag, but his story is unreal.

Matt
