Re: J.B. Swain (Alias "Jeff Davis") - Red Leg

Thanks Matt,

Am working on getting a copy of your and Kip's article on the Redlegs that was in North & South.

Understood on the Jennison/Swain caution... I noted same from Howe's "Pistol Packin' Pencil-Pushers" article. As you can imagine, my interested in Swain is due to his activities assisting to recruit the 1st KCV. I'm sure you have all the sources on the event commonly known as "Jennison's Raid" in late August 1862. However, James M. Williams ordered the Raid, with Jennison interceding in the fate of his men in the Libery Jail. I have the various contemporary newspaper accounts and the related O.R. references and know Swain lived to fight another day.. but have as of yet been unable to determine exactly what the outcome was of this event and when he and his counterparts were released.

Also some time back I located a reference to a "Swane" being with Williams at Fort Scott and refusing to allow any officers commissioned by the Kansas Governor into camp... threatening to shoot any such man who dared to enter camp of 1st KCV... My hunch this is J.B.

Heading to NARA in Washington DC in June... ready to wrap up all the years of research and have started to write seriously... target for 1st draft of manuscript is by end of year... (knock on wood) ;-)

All my best...

Semper Fi,
Chris
