It is my understanding that Blunt awarded the Confederate battery captured at Old Fort Wayne to the SECOND Kansas Cavalry (the regiment that actually took the battery). As a result of this for some time afterwards the Second Kansas Cavalry organically included two batteries: Stover's Second Kansas Cavalry Battery (two mountain howitzers) and Hopkins' Trophy Battery (three six-pounders and one mountain howitzer--the captured pieces).

This was a very unusual arrangement to say the least. Hopkins' battery was later separated from the Second Kansas Cavalry and renamed.
