I think you are on the right track David with the Leavenworth papers. I suspect you will get some of your answers from the 1861 editions.

In Captain Medffords company we have a very interesting organization. As you say organized in 1862, I have been able to trace several men as having been actually Rebels, one of whom was 1st Sergeant Bromwell, deserted in June 1862 along with several others and later killed in SW Missouri by John Kelso then of the 8th MSM. I also note in my post war notes of several men who are buried in Jasper County among them 1st Sgt Thomas Sauls. There are several men who were from Newtonia that was in this company, Bromwell being one of them. It would explain why this company was used as scouts when General Solomon advanced upon Newtonia in September 1862.
