David, in looking at the later roster of the company it doesn't give us much in the way of resolution to your question. However, in looking at those enlistment dates and where they were residing at the time in 1861 I would agree with your speculation that they were part of another organization. If we look at the several battalions that were formed during the early days it would appear that we could probably find something with the milita units. Missouri was doing much the same also. Those units usually reorganized into Voluneer organizations. I think if we look at who was organizing units at that time and who were political figures promoting organizations should tell us something. A possible answer lay, I think, in such newspapers of the era as the Ft. Scott, Topeka and Ft. Leavenworth papers who advertised for recruits. I also see Henry P. Ledger was promoted to Sgt.Major to the regiment from this company and was from St. Louis. I recall seeing something about this mans post war claim as a 1Lt and Sgt Major stating that he brought recruits from St. Louis. Good luck with trying to sort out the early organization of these companies. They have been difficult to sort out.
