My grandfather died in 1910. He was a fireman for the city of Richmond, Virginia. He got run over by a run-away fire truck pulled by a team of horses.

Have you checked with the Indiana State Archives? They might have more information. I would think there would have been some paperwork concerning the demotion and his hospitalization. The hospitalization was probably the basis of his invalid pension application.
