Mary,I see what you mean yet there must be a record for him to write that. Have you tried to get his compiled military service record? You might ask on this site top of page.. The James A. Bone in the 74 Ohio Vols. could be him.Men could muster in the field. At that time the Army of Ohio, which latter became the Army of the Cumberland was in the area for quite some time.Ask if that James (Ohio)mustered in TN..If he did then order. That James is listed as wounded after the Battle of Stones River Dec.31,62-Jan. 6,63.Wounded men of the Army of the Cumberland were sent to several hospitals. First Nashville which only had three thousand beds. The main hospital used by the Army of the Cumberland was Louisville then Lexington KY.. Cincinnati,Ohio another but does mention Illinois but isn't specific.Memphis,TN. too was used. All connected by rail.Combined had a 12,000 bed capacity.I checked Camp Douglas a A.H Bone is buried there but he was from Ark.Cairo had a hospitol for head injuries. It doesn't say how bad his wound. If not bad then he would return to his regiment by the fall of 1863 which would put him in the Chickamuanga Sept.63 and Atlanta Campaign May-Sept.64 .Maybe wounded again?Does your cousin list a date of death other then 1864?Dept. of the Cumberland has their own records.I have obtained from NARA but you would need to be more specific or hire a researcher. Again ask at this site to see if there is a CMSR for a James A.Bone....
