Hi Roger,
I TOTALLY agree with your thoughts that he was probably in the UNION army.
Wasn't this the Land of Lincoln? When I try to think of how things were back then I wonder:
Was Abe Lincoln a frequent visitor to the area as he matured? Was it a common site to see him going
about his routine business on the roads and about town? Did my relatives know him personally? I haven't
researched where Lincoln lived in relation to Shelby County (I think my family was in Dry Point area, too).
I did read the Readers' Digest condensed version of AMERICAN GOTHIC the other day. John Wilkes Booth
had become very sympathetic with the Southern cause. He and some friends had planned to kidnap Lincoln
but that wouldn't work out so he killed him in the theater that he (JWB) was very familiar with because
he was frequent performer there.
Anyway, I figure John Mize was probably Union, too.
Thanks
