That is why I made the suggestion in the previous post. Over here in Ilinois, the secretary of state has an online data base that will give you the info you seek. If you have time, visit the Illinois page and see what I mean. We (myself and some like minded people) were trying to help a friend find a relative whose name was John F Johnson. We knew his age and how tall he was and where he was from, generally speaking, but once I dug in to the Data, I found that there were more than 500 John Jones' of one sort or another. We never did find the man he was seeking but your situation if similar in nature and I have empathy for you, but I am sure there must be a source of rosters somewhere in Iowa that would give you the basic info you seek. Good luck my friend. THe data base in our state will tell you where the man enlisted, what outfit he was with, what his rank was, when he was discharged, etc.
