Do you happen to know if the state of Iowa has records of those men from that state that served? I would think they do. I am in Illinois and ours are in the possesion of the Archives Department and available on line in a searchable data base. You know where he came from and you know his name so if the do, that should narrow it down a lot and once you get the basic info, you can click on the red box at the top of the page and Jim will do you a good job as far as his military and pension records are concerned.
