Re: Texans may have been captured at Fort Donelson

For your research on the 23rd Illinios, my wife's ggrandfather, John J. Kneeland of Chicago, originally served in the 23rd.
After Lexington however, he joined the Navy and served on the gunboat Cincinnati as Captain of the Afterguard. Invalided off
ca Oct. 1862, he subsequently joined the 59th Massachusettes.

Seven years ago, while traveling cross country, we stopped at the famous WWII North Platte Canteen and there prominately displayed,
was a large portrait of Col. Mulligan.

Of interest, my ggrandfather was a Private in Co. K, 43rd Tennessee Infantry, CSA. May 27, 1863 the gun-boat Cincinnati while attempting
to pass Vicksburg, was sunk by artillery fire from the Marine batteries along the river. My ggrandfather was in the rifle pits alongside
one of the batteries. A year later on July 25, 1864 at the battle of Kernstown, my ggrandfather was with Jubal Early in the action in
which Col. Mulligan received his mortal wound.
