I wasn't the one who answered your request for service records. I have no connection with that service, but can understand why the response provided didn't contain the information I provided. Like a surprising number of Confederates, Jeremiah served in more than one unit. If the request for records to the National Archives or other entities providing records doesn't specifically identify all the units the man served in, then the response will only be for the units identified. Thank you for confirming that your ancestor served in the 58th Va Militia. Given the facts in the service record for the man who enlisted, but never served in the 33d Va. Inf., I suspect that he is the same man who served in the 58th Va. Militia. Do you have any evidence that your Jeremiah enlisted in the 33d Va? I do not know who Captain Shelton was who had some interaction with Jeremiah in April 1862. Can you provide more information on this Capt. Shelton? If the date of the interaction was April 1862, then it might have had something to do with the end of Jeremiah's service in the militia, which ended in late March 1862. Finally, you note that Jeremiah's pension application was disapproved. Does the documentation you have provide any more detail as to the reason why it was disapproved. In reviewing pension applications for Virginia veterans, I have noticed several reasons for disapproval. The most frequent reasons relate to the veteran's income or property values being above the limits allowed by law or to the quality of the veteran's service. By that I mean, if there was evidence that the veteran deserted or otherwise did not serve honorably, then the local pension review process could turn a veteran down.

The Information I provided is contained in two separate National Archives microfilm publications. The first contains the compiled service records of men who served in units from Virginia, which provided me the information on the service in the 58th Va Militia and the 33d Va.. The second contains the unfiled papers and slips pertaining to men who served in Confederate units, which provided me the info on J. Faiburn who deserted in 1864.
