The Masters Mate was equivalent to a Midshipman (Trainee for commission), but did not give the chance for advancement that the Middie had. CSN pay for a Masters Mate was $25. monthly, that of the Midshipman $40. The position of Masters Mate was at the discretion of the Master and was usually bestowed apon those of the ranks who exibited discretion and could read and write at the level required.
