I am writing a book about the 91 Canadians or those with close ties to Canada, that have been awarded the Medal of Honor. I believe one got it twice yet he is only recorded for history with a single medal.

Charles Robinson of the USS St.Louis and later the Baron deKalb (same ship renamed) was awarded 2 MOH's for actions in 1862.

He was a BOATSWAIN's MATE during both events.

Do not confuse him with ANOTHER Charles Robinson, but ranked as a CHIEF BOATSWAIN's MATE, who earned a MOH at Mobile Bay and later had it rescinded for desertion.

My Charles is widely reported on the net as earning his MOH during the Yazoo Expedition in Dec of 1862.

But what is not on the net...till now... is that, from the
few pages I have of his PERS file at the Archives, comes 2 scaps of paper saying his MOH was from the battles of Fort's Henry and Donelson in Feb. of 1862, and whilst his ship was still called the USS St. Louis.

My research has turned up descendants...and a story that two medals of some sort ??? were once held by the family, but only one remains. No info about what happened to the second one.

And the one remaining is inscibed for the heroism at the Forts above mentioned. I now have a picture of this medal.

I need someone close to the Archives with some sticktoitfness to search for the Feb 1862 USS St Louis logbooks, and the Robinson PERSONELL or MOH files to see what gems can be detected from them.

I live In Victoria BC and finacing and distance makes the required search most difficult.

His double medals would make him the 21st double on record, dispite the widely reported 19 doubles. General Mindl got the 20th and becuase one was rescinded, history conveniently does not include him in the list of doubles, even though he was so honored for many years.

Of more significance, the dating of the Feb 1862 MOH would make him THE FIRST DOUBLE RECIPIENT in the history of the medal.
