Henry, the endorsement of President Davis, on page 845 of volume 18 is not as forceful as was his message to Lynch. In fact Davis leans towards support of Secretary Mallory, when he states: "The Secretary of the Navy says that the guns are absolutely necessary for the vessels, and that they were prepared for each other."
I still believe that the President's message to Lynch showed a hint of anger about the feud was occuring at Wilmington, when he immediately ordered Lynch to surrender command of his station, and report to the Navy Department. I still haven't seen such an angry tone in any other message from the President towards any other senior Naval commander, and I believe it to be the only instance of its kind during the war.
