Re: Direct Order From President Davis.

This one is proving to be an interesting study in inter-services rivalry. Not one incident, but several precipitated the March 9, 1864 order by President Davis to both Maj. Gen. William Henry Chase Whiting and Flag Officer William Francis Lynch.
The culmination was Whiting's "insubordinate" letter to Secretary Benjamin. Prior to this letter (the contents of which I am awaiting) there was contention over the control of a ship, the CSS Kahukee, Commander Sinclair, CSN,Master. The army, in the person of Brig. Gen. Henry A. Wise, claimed authority. Whiting got his command in the Cape Fear, North Carolina area in November of 1862, in what had been, up till then, a navy show. Friction became dysfunction, hence Davis' order. Wise was transferred up to Virginia. More on this as it comes in.
