Could be. But Confederate artillery (their fuzes being far inferior) sometimes used what they referred to as "rotten shot". It was cased shot with no fuze. Usually used in smoothbores as I have been told. Less tube pressure in that non rifled piece I guess. Nasty thought for the gun crew though. Instant schrapnel, bigger and less predictable than cannister. I'm sure Ron can document that Ordnance Rifle incident. Good posts. I learn SO much here.
