In the Union Army, a battery consisted [usually] of 6 guns of the same caliber. Batteries were commanded by Captains & divided into sections, commanded by a Lt with 2 guns. Each gun was designated a platoon with 1 Sgt & 2 Cpls.

Union Artillery Regiments were composed, usually, of 12 batteries [sometimes more, sometimes less]. Heavy Arty regts incorp[orated 3 battalions of 4 companies/batteries each.

By the end of the war, the Union Army had fielded 61 Heavy Arty Regts and 432 Arty batteries.
