Re: 9th Maryland Infantry (Union)

Thanks for this info. It matches up with what I've been able to gather from other sources. The Charles Town encounter between General Imboden and Colonel Simpson wasn't exactly a shining moment for the Union troops. The book, Hell on Belle Isle, takes up the 9th's story from there, as the author, J. Osborn Coburn, 6th Michigan Cavalry, was at Charles Town and captured along with them. So far his book is the only journal/diary I've been able to locate from a soldier that can fill in more of the day to day activities of the 9th I plan on contacting/visiting the Maryland Archives soon to see if there are any unpublished journals. Given that the 9th was only involved in one skirmish and that those who weren't captured were mustered out in Feb 1864, my hunch is I won't find much.

I appreciate all the valuable info I've gotten from this listserv.
