Danny,

I found him mentioned in "The Official Army Register of the Volunteer Force of the United States For the Years, 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, and 1865" published by U. S. Gov't just after the war. Specifically, he is mentioned in volume 7, pp. 366-67 under the 2nd Regiment Indian Home Guard under Kansas forces. Regarding McDaniel, this source states only that Captain James McDaniel was discharged 8 April 1865. He seems to be the only officer of this regiment discharged on this date.

It also lists the regiment's battle honors as ----ley's Ford (copy caught this one in the margin), Cane Hill, Prairie Grove, Fort Blunt, Honey Springs, and Cabin Creek.

Since this does not directly answer your questions I would encourage you to request a copy of his military service record both from the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D. C. and from Kansas State Archives in Topeka. If you need help with those tasks, consult your local library.
