Re: COL R.H. Graham, 8th KS Infantry

You may have all of the information you want on Colonel Graham but I have been working on a manuscript that I hope will be a book about the 8th Kansas. I have come across the following information on Robert H. Graham.

Colonel Robert H. Graham transferred to the 8th Kansas with three infantry companies, which were formerly known as the 1st New Mexico Kansas Volunteer Battalion. After rebel forces were defeated in the Glorieta Mountains, the New Mexico Expedition was canceled even before it left Kansas. The three companies commanded by Graham became companies H, I, and K of the 8th Kansas and Graham was given command of the entire regiment.

Before the war, Graham was an attorney who had bought a newspaper in Moline, Illinois. He became the editor of the paper, which he named the "Moline Independent." When war came, Graham raised and served as captain of a company of cavalry known as the Moline Independent Rangers. Graham led the men to Lexington, MO where they became part of the 14th Missouri Home Guard, which Graham commanded as a lieutenant colonel. Graham was in Illinois recruiting when Federal troops surrendered at Lexington.

Graham later took his troops west to Kansas. During the winter of 61-62, Graham became ill due to exposure in winter camp near Leavenworth, Kansas. Six weeks later he had not recovered. He never did recover from this illness.

In Late May of 1862, five companies of the 8th Kansas under command of Graham left Leavenworth for Mississippi. When they reached Saint Louis Graham officially turned over command to Lieutenant-Colonel John A. Martin who, due to Graham’s poor health, had really been in charge of the regiment since it left Leavenworth. Graham was granted a 60-day leave. Colonel Graham and his wife traveled to his father's home in Lima, NY. Graham was too ill to leave the house and he died at his father’s home on November 11, 1862.
