Re: COL R.H. Graham, 8th KS Infantry

Searching resources on Colonel Robert H. Graham may take some time..... but I am confident that there are references out there. I checked the Kansas Historical Collections. In Volume XIII, 1913-1914, "Reminicences of the Early Settlement of Dragoon Creek, Wabaunsee County", page 358.

"John A. Martin was lieutenant colonel of the Eighth regiment when it was organized, August 7, 1861, but was placed in command by Colonel Wessels when on February 7, 1862, that officer was ordered to rejoin his own regiment, the Sixth U.S. Infantry. The latter part of the month, February 28, an order was issued reorganizing a number of Kansas regiments, and under its terms the Eighth was consolidated with a battalion raised in New Mexico, and Colonel Robert H. Graham was assigned to the command. Late in May the regiment was ordered to Corinth, Miss. It rendezvoused at Fort Leavenworth, and on May 28, 1862, embarked on the steamer, Emma, starting down the Missouri the next morning. Colonel Graham was taken sick at St. Louis and left the regiment at that place, turning over command to Lieutenant Colonel Martin, who, on November 1, 1862, received his commission as colonel of the regiment, Colonel Graham having died."

In Volume 8, Series I, Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (OR), Colonel Robert H. Graham posted an action report on a skirmish near Aubrey, Kansas with Quantrill's band. (page 335). The report was written on March 19, 1862 at Leavenworth, Kansas. Without repeating the action which was between Missouri guerrillas and two companies of the Eighth Kansas under command of Major Schneider, Graham says the following: "I am fully satisfied that I cannot, as provost-marshal-general, protect the State from guerrilla parties from without and the depredations of the horde of jayhawkers within with the present-scattered condition of my regiment without several companies of cavalry...."

R. H. GRAHAM,

Colonel, Eighth Kansas Regiment, Provost-Marshal-General

This opens up a couple of doors to further research. I would recommend that the Kansas State Historical Society be checked for provost-marshal-general papers for the State of Kansas in early 1862. Also the first name is absolutely Robert, so you can eliminate any other R's, i.e. Richard. The article does not define Colonel Graham's origin, a search of the roster might indicate something about Graham. Another possibility would be to look at Colonel (later governor) John A. Martin's papers. Most assuredly he would have mentioned the man he replaced.

Hope these brief notes are helpful.

Thanks,
Howard Mann
