Lane's Kansas Brigade

Any anecdotal, newspaper related, family related, diary or letter information from members of Lane's Kansas Brigade, or of the following regiments/units is of interest:

3rd Kansas Volunteers - Colonel James Montgomery
4th Kansas Volunteers - Colonel William Weer
5th Kansas Cavalry - Colonel Hampton Perry Johnson
1st Kansas Cavalry - Colonel Charles R. Jennison

or Captain Oliver P. Bayne's Scouts

Captain Van Sycle's Scouts

The organization was broken up over the winter of 1861-2 to consolidate the infantry companies into the 10th Kansas Infantry. The cavalry companies of the 3rd and 4th regiments were disbursed over the 4th, 6th and 9th Kansas Cavalry regiments, and the 1st Kansas Cavalry became the 7th Kansas Cavalry. The Scout units and some miscellaneous Home Guard companies from Fort Scott were either mustered out or transferred into cavalry units.

Howard Mann
