Chris,

I am not familiar with the source you cited, but it agrees exactly with Frederick Way, Jr.'s "Way's Packet Directory." The "J.C. Warner" was launched in Chattanooga,as you write, but in 1883. The "John Warner" was built in New Albany, Indiana in 1856, was in U.S. service during the Civil War, and was sunk in Louisiana in that war while still in U.S. service. It was the "John Warner" that steamed up and down the Missouri River in 1862 attempting to engage southern guerrillas.

P.S. I am not sure an old dogface like me is permitted to say "Semper Fi, Mac" back to a former Marine, but you have my respect.
