Joseph Helmick is listed in the National Archives index as being in the 30th Indiana, company I. I did some research and found a roster of Co I and his name is on it. Also, the Michigan 1890 Veterans Census has him with the same enlistment and mustering out dates as the Indiana 30th. At first I thought it was the Michigan 30th Infantry, but after I recieved the info from the Archives I took another look and the writing is not that clear and it could say Ind, not Mich. Those old documents are hard to read and this one is no exception. Also, the Mich 30th was not formed until 1864. Joseph's enlistment date is Sept 24, 1861, the same date that the Indiana 30th. He served for 3 years, 6 months, 13 days. He was a Pvt when he enlisted and a Corp when discharged. I think he was born in Ohio, possibly Hamilton Co or Franklin Co. I'm still working on that part of his life. He died in Lansing, Michigan in 1919 and is buried at Mt Hope cemetary.
