Illinois Copperhead

Jonathan L. Boyd, my ancestor, was buried in 1863 in the Casper cemetery,Union County, S. Illinois. His son states in a biography about 1895, "His father died while serving in the army at Cairo." However, about 35 yeats ago, Jonathan's grandaughter wrote to me that J.L. was a Copperhead who was captured by bounty hunters and taken to Cairo. There he was forced to labor in all kinds of weather and became ill, finally being released. Her own father (J.L.'s son) saw him being brought home in a wagon and he died soon after. The 109th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment was raised in Union Co. in 1861 , seeing action in Mississippi. After the Emancipation Proclamation, over 200 deserted and regiment subsequently disbanded. I find no evidence of J.L. being in the 109th. He was a little old to be drafted (b. 1831) Could he have been hiding deserters? Any ideas appreciated.
