Vickie,
You can access the prison page by clicking on the box on the left side of the page where it says Message Boards. Once you click on that one you will have another one that drops down and on that one choose Special Interest. After you choose that one, another box will drop down and if you click on Prison which is the second one from the bottom, that will take you to the Prison page where you can post something similar to what you posted on the Illinois page and I am sure there are those there that can help you. Also there is a lady by the name of Ann who pops in on this page from time to time and I am sure when she sees you post she will have some good info for you. She lives in that area and is familar with the resources that exist in south eastern Illinois.
As for why they might be after him, if he was indeed a Copperhead, they were not loved very much in those days and from time to time and in different areas they caused lots of trouble. Perhaps he was involved in one of their riots or was suspected of being and was arrested. If he was just thot guilty of disturbing the peace the sheriff would arrest him but if a state of martial law existed and I don't know if it did or not, the Provost Marshall would have done the arresting and he would have been held in Federal Custody at some appointed place. Ann can probalby help you with this. She would better know than I would.
As for the census, I think Johnny Reb suggested that becuase it is a good way to track someone. You probably can find him in the 1860 census and there after depending on how long he lived. That would tell you where he was living at the time of the census and what his wifes name was and how old they were and how many were living in their house at the time and how old the children were, etc. You can get that from Ancestory.com for a small charge or if you are resourseful, you can find it on line for free. I find the ancestory.com easier.
I live in Springfield. Hope I was able to assist. If I can be of further help let me know. Come back to this page often, I am sure if any of us find out anything we will post if for you. I am sure that Ann will post here. Did you notice that Bruce Allardice posted the fact the the Provost Archives are in Chicago. Bruce is an author of renown who has written much about the period as well as an accompolished Lawyer who is only to happy to help students of the era.
Welcome to history sites and come back often. Good luck in your search.
Frank
