The Illinois Adjutant General's Report page 61 states that "among the killed and wounded . . . was First Lieutenant J. Q. A. Jones, Company K, killed; Second Lieutenant Owan Wilkins, Company A, wounded , and Seggeant Jacob Wheeler, company K, was twice wounded, once dangerously."
Robert W. Campbell in an article entitled a "Brief History of the 17th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry" published In Transactions of the Illinois Historical Society for the Year 1914, pages 184-190 list the losss as "killed, 1; wounded 20, i mortally---Lieut. J.Q.A. Jones, of Co. C, who died three days after the battle." Campbell further wrote: "In this, the first engagement of the 17th REgiment, Thomas Layton was killed, who, so far as the writer is informed, was the first Illinois soldier killed in battle in the War of the Rebellion."
Col. Leonard F. Ross in O.R., Series I, Vol. III, page 210-211 wrote he had "1 man killed and 27 wounded."
From an article I wrote for our weekly newspaper, the Zephyr, on the Wells family, I can tell that John Howard Wells was severely injured. He was hit in the right leg and hospitalized in Ironton, Missouri. The ball was not removed and he made a complete recovery.
