In Response To: Exchange Process - City Point ()

Contact me by e-mail at society@fortdelaware.org. I wrote an article on this subject which was published in a past issue of the Fort Delaware Notes.

City Point was General Grant's supply base in the spring of 1865. POWs delivered for exchange were taken by boat up the James River to Cox's Landing (near Aiken Landing), transferred by road through the Union lines near Fort Harrison to Boulware's Wharf on the James River between the lines and from there by steamboat up to Richmond.

Transportation was provided to prisoners released from Point Lookout after the war was over to a point nearest their homes that could be reached by water and/or rail. We can discuss your family member's trip home from Point Lookout after the war was over when I know more about him.
